If you are an devotee when it comes to musical instruments and you have your heart set on that amazing guitar you saw last fortnight, better start to teach yourself guitar. There are many ways you can learn to become a good guitarist but you have to begin at the very beginning first. Here are the steps.
1) Get a Guitar
You must have your own guitar. How can you be trained to play without the proper instrument at hand ? You have to ascertain first which brand of guitar to play. You can get going by borrowing a guitar but what if you cannot borrow it on a regular basis? Your training and practice will be affected when you teach yourself guitar. You need to save the money you need to buy your own guitar in the meantime and acquire your own guitar later.
2) Decide on Your Melody
Select a particular meloday that you love, which continually sets you in the mood for playing your guitar. You need to select something inspiring enough to push you to try and play the chords many times until you get it dead on. It is not easy to teach yourself guitar, so you need a very excellent reason to do it which is to play and hum the meloday that you simply fancy.
3) Be brave to request for help
Once you have determined which unique song you like most but you do not have any sense on how to play the tune, ask someone who plays guitar to assist you. Let him figure out the tabs. If you do not know how, let someone convert it for you. Do not be afraid to request for help when you start to teach yourself guitar. It is the easiest way to become skilled at something new. The same person may also be able to aid you to determine which finger goes where to achieve the right sound.
It would be terrific if you learn to play guitar by listening rather than learning the normal way. It does not depend so much on the chords, but more on yourself. You create the song just by listening to every strum of your guitar. Statistics show that practically 90% of those who play the guitar acknowledge they learned it the hard way. In fact, playing the guitar is more complex than it looks. It is by far easier to hear than to comprehend. Learning independantly without any background or any help from someone is very difficult.
4) Get some instructional guide or find an instructor
If you cannot find the money for a guitar instructor, you need to buy a book about what you can and cannot do when learning a guitar. It would also be almost impossible to guess where to put the most important finger on the most important string. Try to obtain a step by step guide on acquiring the basic and most crucial chords that usually appears on almost every melody.
Do you still need an adviser? It would be advisable to have someone help you whenever possible. You need a person whom you trust to listen to you. He or she will be able to check if your fingers are positioned in their correct positions when you start to teach yourself guitar. A reference material will surely be of big help but it will not be able to hear if your are out of tune. Ask help from your friend whenever you need to.
Commence learning the basic chords first and deal with the more difficult ones later. Chords such as A, A minor, E, E minor, D, G are more straightforward to learn first. There are many songs which contain only the basic chords. Moving your fingers to change strings with every change of tempo allows you to develop at a more rapid pace.
5) Do not rush yourself and try to be patient
Set some time to practice every other day. Many great guitarists have the skill only after a long period of time. The trick to learning something novel is to create a positive attitude. Be tolerant even when you make mistakes. Think of it as a hobby and you will get better at it with each passing day. Do not put pressure on yourself but congratulate yourself because you are able to teach yourself guitar and save some money.
